I was reviewing the sections of the 1983-1984 factory manuals pertaining to the replacement of the timing chain. The prefered method in the manuals is the use of RTV to seal the surfaces of the front cover and block. I checked with my favorite auto parts house, and they stock a gasket set from Fel-Pro for this job.

What are the pros and cons of each method ? Does a combination of both work well ? I have not bought any supplies, except the new timing gear set. Thank you for your help.

I used both gaskets and RTV on the timing cover and water pump with great success for my timing chain to gear conversion. I just like the extra insurance, but the valve covers and oil pan are much better served with just RTV.
