Junk yard sold me what they discribed as a 1987 6.2 from a 3500 truck to go in my 1/2 ton Suburban. The intake is Like a J, no egr valve on the engine and the injectors are long like a 6.2. When I opened the pan to take a look at the bearings, chain, cyl walls etc. I notice a difference from my old C engine. The center webs are thicker by about .05 in and at the front of the crank just aft of the timing chain are four stators protruding out from the crank. There is also a hole in the timing chain cover(it is sealed with a small plate and bolt) where a sensor could be located to the stators, as in tach sensor or crank location sensor. The part number on the crank looks like 23502592. The only stamp marks I have found so far are on the back of the block under the heads and are (RSWS)

The GM parts people could not help though they seemed to try. Any one out there with an idea of the year? Oh yes the rear seal looks like a one piece unit though I havn't pulled the rear main off to confirm it.

Thanks SteveMc

Sounds like you've got a 1994 or newer 6.5 block. There should be a 4-digit date code on the bellhousing flange behind the passenger side head deck. For example an "A129" would be a block built in January 12, 1999 (or Jan 12, 1989).

Thanks, Ill take a look tomorrow. Would the letters be stamped into the block?

Should have mentioned. It came with the injector pump. Looks like the old one on my 1987 6.2, just not so many wires coming out.

The newest 6.5 engines are "stamped" with a slightly different date code arrangement, but all of the 6.2's and most of the 6.5's used a raised 4-character letter/number set that appears like the individual characters found in the block casting number.

Wow! Sounds like you got lucky and got a 6.5L when you thought you were getting a 6.2L. I'll bet that probably what happened was that the original 6.2L was replaced in that '87 truck with a later model 6.5L, and the junkyard folks probably didn't know that. That would explain the original 6.2L fuel system on a later model 6.5L.

Checked the block deck behind the head on passengers side today and found (C037) in raised letters. So that would be March 3, 1997 according to MP. Maybe Casey is right and I got lucky. His idea of a replacement engine in the 87 truck may be what happened.

Talked with the engine shop at Diesel Services Group and he said the Stud Girdle Kit I ordered would work as long as a 18 MM socket would fit on the Center main Bearing bolts. And they fit the socket, so should be ok with that. I think I'll pull both Inj Pumps and see what differences there are. I already have new 6.5 injectors, so need to think the pump issue thru.

Thaks for the input

If this is a '97 block, it'll have 10mm diameter outside bolts on the center three main caps. You should pull the center three main caps and inspect for cracks emanating from the inner bolt holes.

Thanks mp. I will check that area when the stud kit arrives. Are these cracks reason to condemm the block or would the girdle kit help?

On the topic of block date codes... I have three different '660 blocks sitting in the shop right now. two of them do not have the date code at the back of the block like the other '660 and my '599 block do. Is there an alternate spot where there might be a date code? On one it doesn't matter as it is missing two of the main journals. Also, what was the range of dates when the '660 block was built? The '660 that has the date code on it was just magged and showed no cracks!!

TIA

I've got an answer for you on the date location. It should be the 4 digit code near the front of the block. the coolant crossover from the left head would pass over it on that flat machined surface. another way is to look straight down where the injectin pump would be and rotate your eyes to the right. should be there.

The Rest of the story.

After matching things up and buying parts it appears I did get lucky and got a 1997 J engine. Just started it up and runs fine. I can hear the timing gears but I don't mind as the throttle responce is great. No smoke or blowby so maybe this one will go another 221K for me.. By that time I hope I can get a newer body.

Thanks for all the comments
