rubber freeze plug ok?

I didn't notice the rear driver-side freeze plug had corroded through, until stopped at home - and my vapor trail caught up with me . . .
It is in a real awkward spot - and I'd like to refill the coolant and see if I did any real damage. :mad: Are the replacement rubber expandable freeze plugs (loaded question) 'reliable'?

I've had one in my old 82 since last summer, but I live in sunny central Florida, where it rarely hits freezing.
