'93 6.2 80k on rebuilt did same thing on last 2 engines.Emits smoke but will not start will start if glow plugs light for a second or so when warm.
I've had a couple of 6.2's & 5.7's that were like this. I finally put in a manual switch which cured my problems.
I was having the same problem for a while - new glow controller and plugs and everything, but when it got hot out, it would not start, at least not until I took the engine doghouse off and let it cool off for a while (BIG pain in the butt, especially in a client's parking lot, say)
Turns out, it was the starter - it just wasn't turning fast enough. It was fine if it was cool enough out for the glows to cycle, or if the engine was cold, but once it got hot enough that they didn't cycle, the starter could not do the job on its own.
New starter - problem gone.
Your mileage, of course, may vary......
Good luck!
