View Full Version : How much boost is too much?

Last night I took my fifth-wheel out for a spin with the newly turbo'ed 6.2L to see how she handled. Wow! What an improvement. Can't wait to go on vacation now!

My question is this: how much boost can a stock 6.2L safely handle? Last night I was able to hit 14 psi, and it sorta scares me to see that much boost. I can only reach 14 psi by running full-throttle at near governed rpm, like pulling hard in second gear, just before she hits the governor. Pulling hard, full-throttle, in third at 55 mph only produces 10 psi, which is fine by me.

Should I be worried?

As a side note, I still never saw EGT's above 975. Mostly in the 900 range.

I think that you're probably safe with 14 pounds max. Your EGTs sound good, so you're not going to be burning any holes in pistons. You have taken care of your engine, and the 6.2L heads/gaskets are up to the task. I wouldn't worry.

Personally, I've buried the neddle at 15 pounds before, and though I don't make a habit of it, the engine seems to handle that pressure very well.

Do you think I ought to tweak the pump a little bit in order to get EGT's up to 1050? Or just leave it alone for right now and make sure everything works fine for a while? Will turning the fuel up a bit more increase my boost?

We're heading to Colorado next week with the RV, so I want to make sure I don't blow something up along the way!

I think that you can afford to give it a 1/8 turn or so. That's a good place to start at least, but I doubt that you'll need much more. Where is the engine timed at right now?

1050 is also when I back off, but I usually choose to keep it under 1000 and just sacrifice speed. Watch those gauges, and enjoy the trip!

Where is the pyro probe at?

Before turbo 1000

I regularly put over 15-20psi (indicated - gauge had hit the stop) into the "Britannic" special, but it's not recommended and definitely not the way to go, if you intercool the boosted air  .

Pyro is located in the stock Banks position, pre-turbo, on the underside of the right hand exhaust manifold, just an inch or two before the exhaust enters the turbo.

I was thinking that 14-15 psi would mean that I could probably install an intercooler and not sacrifice that much boost pressure....looks like I've got another project to start planning! tongue.gif
