Tried to set the timing on my truck this weekend using my Rotunda 78-100 meter.
Pump is advanced 1/8" to drivers side and got 06.5 @ idle and -02.6 @1400.
According to what I've read here I should have 4* @1400 this means I'm way off.
Wonder if the meter is going south on me.
Truck has brand new gear drive so that should not be an issue.
There is an IH truck garage down the street guess I'll have to have them check and see what it really is timed at.

Merle,

I suspect the meter is not working properly.

If I understood your post correctly, you have installed a set of dual idler gears in place of the timing chain??

If so, I would expect your timing mark to be moved to the PASSENGER side in order to be timed correctly. When I installed my dual idler gears I had to move my timing mark almost 1/4 inch toward the passenger side to get it timed correctly. There is no slack in the gear set-up like there is in a chain set-up, hence, the difference.

Are you putting the meter probe in the #3 cylinder glow plug fitting?? Is the offset on the meter set correctly??

Merle,

when you put your gear set on the engine, did you turn your camchaft from under to above?

that was the mistake i had done, the timing was way of.

The engine is a fresh 6.5 reman from The diesel depot, the gear drive was installed by them.
I was using #3 cyl with the offset listed on a paper that came with meter, maybe it is incorrect offset for #3 @ 99.5*
