View Full Version : Any Opinions on these used Hummer engines on epay?
Basically, they were removed from running Hummers to be replaced with 6.5TDs........Here's the link (I hope):
Used 6.2 takeouts (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33615&item=7977880326&rd=1)
I need to go deep into the engine in my van (strongly suspected bad head gasket plus some bad lifters and leaky water pump) and since time and budget are both significant considerations, the idea of swapping sounds plenty appealing.
I know military engines usually have a lot of idling hours on them so the low mileage can be misleading, but still these don't sound like too bad a deal and I can afford one soooo....
Any thoughts about it?

LOOKS LIKE THEY WOULD BE OK W/THE LOW MILES.. I WOULD CALL YOUR LOCAL SALVAGE YARD TO SEE WHAT USED 6.2'S ARE SELLING FOR AND ASK WHAT THE MILES WERE TO GET SOME KIND OF IDEA BEFORE I BID,
I LIKE USED PARTS THEY DO SAVE YA A LOT OF MONEY IF YOU GET A GOOD PART.
I JUST GOT 2 TRANSMISSIONS USED AND HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS OUT OF EITHER OF THEM.
GOOD LUCK.
I'd be very wary of buying used humvee engines, for 2 reasons. One, they spend a lot of time idling so the mileage really doesn't mean anything. Two, as far as I know the army doesn't do scheduled oil changes any more, instead they take regular oil samples and have them analyzed. If a sample comes back bad, the report will say to change oil & filter and send in another sample. If that sample comes back bad, the engine is replaced. I guess what I'm saying is the military doesn't remove good engines from humvees, they remove bad ones.
Hmmmmmm, that's food for thought, Phil.
I was understanding that this was a different case as these engines were all removed en masse to be upgraded to 6.5 TDs, so in theory, they are not engines that would have been removed otherwise.
Given enough cubic dollars, I'd just search for a 6.5 TD with the center mount turbo from a van, but I don't really find myself in that situation so I'm checking out options......
Any more feedback?
Thanks again.

Phil is correct about the oil changes.
They don't get done. Once a year we take an oil sample and send it away. Supposedly they will contact the unit if there is a problem. I have never had to turn in a HMMWV so not really sure.
As the the engine upgrade. A large number of HMMWVs are getting retrofitted to the 6.5td to handle the additional weight of the uparmor packages. All 8 of our HMMWVs got additional armor, but no engine. But I know that some of the units given a direct combat mission did get new engines. They were actually doing these conversion in country. I have no idea what they were doing with the 6.2s, and I tried to find one, I want the intake and snorkle. But I find it crazy to think that the Army is paying to ship the engines back stateside. But that probably means they are.
