My fluid power and mechanics class has prompted me to get a better understanding of how the diesel moves within the fuel lines. I don't know the ID of the injector lines, so I can't compute a Reynolds number, but I suspect the flow is well into the turbulent range.

I was also cruising the API website, www.api.org (http://www.api.org) and ran across this fuel table.

The Reynolds number is used to correlate flow of various liquids of differing viscosities thru a given meter, usually an orifice. Won't find one of those on the 6.2\6.5.

However, try .078" id and 45.5mm3 @ 3600rpm, where any one cylinder will be firing (four-stroke engine) 1800 times per minute / 60sec per minute = 30 injection events per second x 45.5mm3.

And remember, it's also NOT firing 1800 times per minute at 3600rpm, right? Seven other cylinders in there clamoring for their turn. Start, stop...

Wanna take the long route? Try 600miles at 60mph and 15mpg to get a sense of the flow thru one injector line over a period of time.

Glad you can do the math....it makes my head hurt.

And you wanna talk turbulence - you oughtta see inside the fuel tank sometime, while driving over these Houston streets. Ha!
