tips on buying a 6.2 ?

I want to buy a take-out 6.2 for a swap on a 4x4 truck, but don't know what I should be looking out for. What is "high" mileage for these engines, and can compression checks be done on these engines like are done on gassers?

I am thinking a Clark 280VO 5 speed OD manual transmission from a '70s 2 ton Cheby truck may a good set up. Thoughts?
