Please, forgive the stupid question but...

I have never lived anywhere where there was much cold weather, and subsequently, never usedc my block heater.

Should the heater make noise while it is plugged in? I just thought it would be a "silent partner".

Yep, it makes noise, kind of a steam sound, well I don't know how to describe it, but yet, it makes some noise.

How about let's say it sounds like a coffeepot?

John's right. They make noise. Kinda like a coffee percolator.

If it has never been used, or it has been a while, be sure the cord is in good shape. A bad cord, or connector, can cause a fire. Inspect every inch of it for cracked insulation, and especially a damaged connector where it plugs into the heater. Remove it if needed to get a good look at it. The cords are easily replaced, and available at most Napa stores. When they are stored for long periods of time, they will develop cracked insulation where the creases are, and the cracks open up when the cord is moved around.

My block heater reminds me more of bacon in a frying pan.

Mine does not make any noise-but I think it because the connector is fried. Need to work on that....
