Just bought a engine that is suppose to be a gm 6.2. How can I confirm this info. Numbers on engine block " 1F 599" Above #1 cylinder "4G2H 722" Heads marked K163 567 & lL33 567" front left of timing chain "GM LD" no 6.2L on the engine anywhere.

If I am not mistken, a 599 block is the very thick block used in 1992-1993 6.2 and 6.5L GM diesels. This is from what I can gather, the block to use for hi-po buildups.

There should be a big white sticker on your drivers side valve cover, or with my car its on the aircleaner body, with important engine information on it. In the upper left corner it says (very small) if its a 6.2 or a 6.5. Maybe it's painted over??

No stickers. How can I positivly find the size. If in used my 6.2 ip pump on a 6.5 engine. CAn I damage the engine? Please Help!

the numbers you are interested in are on the back of the block on the lip about an inch wide right behind cyl heads.
The number on drivers side is casting # pass side is date code.
Lay those numbers on us someone can identify it. :D

Hello All,
I also would like to know what blocks are good to start building an engine and how you can tell the fabled "599" block from the rest?
Also is the old red engine better than a 84-86 black engine or should these be scraped infavor of the previously mentioned 599?

jik, My apologies I lost track of this post.
I have the identical casting numbers as you have.
The numbers from passenger side indicate your block is a 94.
You say that 93 was the last year for 6.2?, WRONG!
The way it was explained to me is that blocks with our numbers were cast in 94 as replacement engines not as original factory install.
So we have all the goodies of the "599" block meaning it can be bored to 6.5 specs without reducing the wall thickness of the cyl walls thinner than original 6.5 specs.
You have a lucky find as I was talking to Jamie at The Diesel Depot last week and he says the supply of these blocks is about gone.

Sorry for bringing up this old post.

I stumbled over this site (http://www.rebuiltdieselengines.com/chevy6-5.html) with the 6.5 block casting numbers. According to that, there are only 4 different numbers. Including the one Merle and jik did mention. Up to now I thought this # was for the latest 6.2 blocks.

Any ideas?

Did someone find the different casting numbers for the 6.2?

I find the numbers on that site a bit confusing as both the '599' and the '2929' blocks according to all information I have ever seen were 6.2 engines with the thicker cyl walls so they could also be used as 6.5 blocks with just a little larger bore thus having both displacements with a common block.....Merle
