-Pipe sealant with teflon (any particular brand? I have permatex)?
-Felpro gray bolt prep (now is probably a Loctite product - I haven't found it)?
-Loctite 242 on threads with drop of oil under the bolt's head?
-Just use what comes on the Felpro TTY bolts?
Thanks

Take a wire wheel to the new head bolts, removes all the white goop.
Reapply the permatex sealer to the threads.
Don't use thread locker or oil.

On the 6.2 diesel engines i've serviced,i've always used Permatex Ultra Black silicone on the head bolt threads.Does a excellent job everytime.Never, ever experienced trouble after using that method.

Hi
If you have the time, after you remove the sealer that comes on the bolts.Run a die down the bolts to make sure the threads are good.
When i did my heads, most of the bolts were fine butthere were a few that the threads needed cleaning up,had to use a wrench to turn them throught the die,And don't forget to clean the threads in the block as well.
Good Luck

For our 6.5 Project engine, I cleaned the new Fel-Pro head bolts using a wire wheel, then re-threaded them all along with re-threading the bolt holes in the block. Then, I used a small amount of GM teflon thread sealant on the bottom 3/8" of the bolt threads. 165,000 miles since - no leaks, no drips, no errors. smile.gif

I just used the Fel-Pro head bolts out of the box. I also ran a tap down the holes in the block to clean them out.

It has been a year and no problems so far.

Thanks. I'll probably use the teflon stuff. Is the Permatex pipe thread sealant with teflon close enough to the GM stuff? I can't find the GM stuff. Will wire brush the bolts and retap the holes/die the threads.

All I did when I had the heads off mine was clean the holes in the block with the right size tap, and use the new TTY bolts as they came out of the box... hope I don't have any problems...

I used the same method as MP; 44,000 trouble-free miles.
