I have a 83 6.2L that is hard to start and smokes at startup. Glow plugs are good, had to put a bypass switch to relay to activate the glow plug relay longer and this did help, the glow plug controller is new and seems to be working correctly.
Anyone got any ideas of where to begin to correct the problem.

More specific info would help: Hard to start when cold, lots of cranking after sitting a couple days, how much cranking, how much smoke, how long does it last, which exhaust pipes, how cold is it, etc? Blue grey smoke for 30 seconds or so is not uncommon until the cylinders heat up some. Off the bat, all else being normal, I would just take a wild guess and say you may have a couple of bad glow plugs which is pretty easy to test for, but you say they are ALL good?

In addition to the information requested above please tell us if this has just recently started to happen? Did you just get this vehicle or is this your first winter with it? What is the temperature outside that the vehicle is experiencing?

The more info you provide the better the armchair mechanics on this board can help.
