Getting ready to take an RV trip to Fort Worth this weekend...I decided I needed to hook up the trailer and go for a test drive before hitting the road.

Wow! I've got a lot more power, that's for sure! A lot of the hills around my place used to have me pullling down in second gear, but now I can fly right up the hills in third, not losing any speed at all! I can definitely tell the engine is not laboring at all pulling the 29' trailer around. Maintaing any speed I want is no problem now.

Boost has increased substantially as well. Before the rebuild, max. boost was 14 psi, with the engine near the governor, EGT's at 1050. Now, I've seen the boost spike past 17 psi! Pulling the trailer up one long hill at 60 mph used to see me at 11 psi. Now I see 14 psi at the same speed and EGT's are still at 1050. I was worried that EGT's might get out of control wih the extra fuel, but I guess the lower compression allows the boost to build with no problem, keeping the air moving through it.

The only time EGT's climb above 1050 is if I lug the engine in overdrive, when there's not enough boost to keep the air moving through the engine.

Water temps might be a problem...engine coolant temp climbs pretty rapidly when pulling hard at high rpm. I might have to upgrade the cooling system some more if I do a lot of towing. It'll be fine for close weekend camping trips. I'll see how it does on the Fort Worth trip.

I've replaced all the u-joints, but I can't get rid of a drive-line vibration. I'll have to keep working on that one.

I just finished with my complete truck overhaul minus body/paint work. I took my truck to a driveline shop and basically had them rebuild the driveshaft with stronger u-joints and balance front and rear units. I also had COSTCO balance my tire/wheels. Zero vibration. It's actually pleasant to drive now.

Jerry,

I may have to have the driveline balanced. I can't find anything else in need of replacing. I have one wheel that can't get balanced, either. They've got all the weights they can put on it, and it's still out a few ounces. I may have to take it to a tire specialist to get the tire or wheel shaved.

Grape,

We'll be arriving in the Fort Worth area Saturday evening, and be there until Tuesday morning. We'll be staying at an RV park in Burleson, near our friends' house. What part of Fort Worth are you in? It'd be cool if we could meet up!
