Yup, definately 100% true..............
The first run of Dmaxes DID have different
trannys,............. and cast iron heads, external injectors, twin turbos with true dual exhaust stacks in the bed,and a few other things that I've since forgotten.

New Trucks for the general public.....NO!

Tester trucks in '99-'01??? It could be a possibility. The 4L80 will bolt up fine, and under most circumstances handle the power just fine. But I'd doubt that they'd be able to handle 20+K GCWR.

The Pikes Peak racer at the Duramax factory in Ohio had a Hydramatic (4L80 I believe)transmission, but it had listed that it used a 3.06 first gear ratio (VERY similar sounding to the 4L60) Was it a 4L80 with a different planetary setup, or was it a beefed 4L60? In any event, the reason an ALLISON wasn't used in that racer was HP drain. The Allison taps considerably more HP than any other light truck transmission.

I heard EXACTLY the same thing from a customer that came in the store a while back!
