I was at the GMBUYPOWER website looking at what options were different for the 2002 models compared to my 2001 and noticed that there's an option when you choose the DMAX/Allison for a Generator.

GENERATOR 105 AMP DUAL $224
Code: 8X5

Does anyone know anything about this? I heard rumors that GM was looking into an optional Generator for the Work trucks but isn't $224 kind of cheap?

kburati,

GM refers to alternators as generators, even in the Helm's service manuals. The dual generator option was available for the 2001's as well, although many of the dealer's seemed unaware of the option (including mine).

The dual alts can be added to a single setup without much difficulty. I have pics of the dual install at the link in my sig, and there are numerous posts on this subject. Try the search feature if you're interested in learning more.

DetroitBob,

IIRC, approx $80 + S/H for the aux alt bracket, pulley, serp belt, terminal for ECM, and bolts.

You will also need the 4 position alt connector (I got mine off a 1999 1/2 ton at a salvage yard), fusible link for alternator output, and your choice of alternator. I originally used a fusible link from the same salvage vehicle, but then replaced it with a few feet of high quality car audio 4 gauge power wire with a 200A megafuse/holder.

The major expense is going to be the cost of the second alt. The hardest part of this install was putting on the new serp belt.

Man I hate to sound stupid but I guess I'll never learn if I dont ask. What are the advantages of having two alternators. I do realize that diesels are hard on batteries and starters.

Thanks, I noticed the bracket under the hood for the second alternator. Sounds like a good idea if you going to add more stuff like you mentioned.
