If you want a pic of the inside of the factory filter then e-mail me at address below. When I changed it it had a lot of water in the bottom and the light never told me there was water in the fuel. You can see the damage. Filter had about 4000 miles on it.

There's a little circular float in that plastic unit that screws onto the bottom of your filter. I don't know how much it takes but that float has to rise to certain height before it is detected as "water in fuel" by the ECM.

Is it possible you did not reach that point yet? I'm sure they didn't want to design the thing to go off with just a minute amount of water.
