OilGuard has a new high quality custom aluminum billet oil filler cap with a fitting for connecting to the bypass filter return line. This option replaces the oil pan return fitting allowing use of the popular Fumoto Valve (http://www.lubespecialist.com/product.php?code=fumotovalves&section=fumoto) for easy oil drains. (a bear originally installed his OilGuard using this method).

OilGuard recently sent me one of the new caps for a fit check. The cap has a 1/8 NPT tapped hole in the center and initially came with a 90 degree 1/8NPT to #4 JIC adapter for connecting to the return line. When installing the new cap I found that this 90 fitting wouldn’t provide enough clearance to the A/C line next to the filler tube when turning the cap CCW for removal. To get adequate clearance to the A/C line when rotating the cap, I used a straight 1/8 NPT to JIC adapter and a JIC M/F 90 degree elbow. This arrangement also allows easy adjustment of the return hose angle relative to the cap. A better solution would be to use a 90 deg JIC hose fitting thus eliminating the 90-degree elbow (I believe OilGuard will supply the caps with the 90 degree hose fitting).

So far my Oilguard Installation (http://community.webshots.com/photo/65003591/201035637RbitbN) has 27k miles on it with no problems and I’ve been seeing good UOA results. The oil also “looks” clean on the dipstick.

Looks like Oil Guard now also sell a full-flow spin on oil filter.

Bill, that cap looks nice. Does Oil Guard have a swivel option?

It would be nice to know the beta specs on OilGuards new Dmax full-flow. I'll contact them and see if they have the numbers. To date (as far as I know) the new Mobil-1 M1 303 has the best numbers, with Baldwin a close second as follows:

Mobil-1 M1-303
Nominal efficiency: 5 microns (Beta=2, 50%)
Absolute efficiency: 18 microns (Beta=75, 98.7%)

See Mobil-1 Filter for the Duramax, M1-303 (http://forum.thedieselpage.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=008010) for more info.

Baldwin B1441
Nominal efficiency: 8 microns (Beta=2, 50%)
Absolute efficiency: 23 microns (Beta=75, 98.7%)

Also, OilGuard didn't mention anything about a swivel fitting for their new cap. It would be a nice option. I mounted an AMSOIL swivel fitting on a standard cap but I haven't had time to install it. I may put the swivel fitting on the OilGuard billet cap and install a new return line at my next oil change (currently still have the pan fitting). I was also thinking about taking an oil sample for an ISO particle count test (and/or Ferographic test) directly from the cap with the engine running. Seems like it would be a good test of the bypass filter alone. What do you think?

I sent an email to Mark at OilGuard requesting specs on their new Duramax full flow oil filter. His response was as follows:

"50% at 10 microns and 98.6% at 20 microns.
These are primarily designed for capacity and endurance, even over efficiency
(which is excellent)."

Also regarding the new billet return cap, he says they will be including a swivel fitting with the kit.

Bill,
Thats excellant numbers indeed.
I also think the analysis taken at the Oil Guard outlet is a good idea. Since I run the same setup I can contribute to the cause. Let me know if you decide to send one via e-mail. :D

Did O.G. mention when the oil return kits will be available?

Tommy,

I'll keep you posted on the bypass oil test ... I've been curious to see if there is a difference in results when sampling directly at the output of the bypass compared to a sample from the pan. It might be a while before I get to it though .. my current project list for the wife, kids, house, yard, car
