1. Collects dust, dirt, etc. requiring you to detail compartment.
2. Blocks the hose clamp on the tube from the air box.
3. Adds one more hose clamp and one more screw to air tube removal.
4. Covers us boost sensor for SPA DG211.
5. Provides spot for wire clip to hold boost sensor wire up off the engine.
6. Doubles as a cheap plastic drum.
7. Sells more torx drivers to remove.
8. Makes people as what's it there for because I cannot figure out an actual functional purpose for it either. :D

Oops, forgot one. Adds $100 to price of truck to have blow molded part, mount on intake and extra little hose to connect to the air tube.

On the 02 and newer trucks I believe there is an air intake resonator built into it to reduce intake resonance (noise). On my truck, an 01 I don't have it, but I believe you do.

Wonder if yanking it would cause an increase in turbo noise whine? I've been thinking of trying this but have yet to find a suitable cap. Maybe a bit of ducktape for a quick spin to find its effect on noise and then some more investigation on a suitable replacement if it is found to just quite the sound of the turbo doing its thing.

I want to hear her scream but dont want to drop 250 on something that wont give me much increase other than noise. Swisscheesed the box and that helped a bit. JK 4"-5" exhaust will hopefully go on this weekend! Maybe I could stuff a wistle into my intake tube

That got me thinking.....is the 01 tube the same as an 02-03 short of the hole for the silencer? The hole for the silencer must create a slight bit of turbulence I would think, maybe there would be a gain going to an 01 tube? Probably not much and I wouldnt think you could tell by SOP(seat of pants) but free hp is good. I'm sure you could pick up one for cheap with people going to an aftermarket setup. And still retain the fact air box. If I get more whine for a few $$$ I am happy but I aint dropping 250.

Am I thinking too much guys?

Edit: This is also figuring its a totaly bolt in deal wich I assume it is......

ratlover, I took mine off and used the top of a spray paint can to block off the hose. I really couldn't tell a difference, so it went back on. On the later trucks it is an intake resonator, but I couldn't tell what it was supposedly resonating. ;)

In the AFE Stage 2 installation instructions, it refers to this part as an "air resevoir". I guess that is for the times when the engine runs out of air around the truck and needs to draw from this "resevoir"! :D

Must be a high elevation thing. But I did find the service information on this "resevoir" in the Helm's service manual. It is in volume 6 right after the information detailing how to check and change the turn indicator fluid. ;)

It's an off-brand, "Turn of the Century" or something like that

I made mine purdy... under the hood paint (http://www.monkey.net/steve/truck_mod18.htm)

Since that pic was taken I added a K&N air charger. I kept it there to fill the empty space. I just used a piece of aluminum to fabricate a small bracket to attach it in the front. Here is the only pic I could find... pic (http://www.monkey.net/steve/images/power_cable_2.jpg)
