What exhaust gas temps do you people that are running a "juice" seeing while towing?

The reason I ask is that my '02 Dodge Cummins HO truck that I sold to get this Duramax Chevy routinely saw pre-turbo exhaust gas temps of 1400 degreess, and one time got as high as 1550 degrees. That truck had severe problems with excess heat from day one, so I never dared to modify it at all, but this Chevy Duramax seems to stay nice and cool. I have already ordered a "juice" and a 4" exhaust, and plan to order gauges in the next few days. The juice and exhaust will get here first though, and I'm just wondering if I can "get by" for a few weeks before putting the guages in.

Thanks.

If you push the truck real hard (drive stupid when towing grades in hot weather) I've seen 1450 on setting #4.

Typical temps go no higher than 1250.

I could easily run it to 1500 degrees on level 2 if I don't watch the gauge. I have the 4" JK exhaust and I still have to feather the throttle 3/4 the way up on the steep ones to keep it at 1350 or less. You do get to the top faster, thats for sure and sound good doing it.

Things can get pretty warm when pulling a grade. This is the only time when the temps reach +1300*. Solo driving has never been a problem yet.The 4" exhaust did help to the tune of 100* but the temps will still hit and surpass the 1300* mark. I tow around 10,000# and while climbing steeper grades the EGT's rise fairly quick. This is the drill: 1.Start up the grade watching the temp rise rapidly. 2. Reach the 1300* mark if still in overdrive(the juice will pull O.D. in most situations).3. Mash the peddle to get to 4th ,temp drops to around 1100*. 4. Truck pulls 4th so well it shifts to O.D.,temps rise again. 5. Mash peddle......
This is why I want to get the O.D. lockout switch when I get the time. I would think everyone towing with the added power will want it for this reason. Low load towing situations rarely yield anything over 1000*. Hope this helps.

I've never seen over 1250 towing upto 19000# in level 2.

Running stock exhaust w/flowmaster muffler.

No mountains in MI, just hills.

Does Mich. have any monster hills that are so steep that it will drag your truck down into 3rd gear? If there is, go there with your load and try it.

The other thing is it depends on what gauges someone has as to how hot their truck runs. There is a wide window between different gauges.

What about without a load? What kind of temps do you see ripping up a grade in level 4 passing up 5.0 mustangs and such???

I can answer the "no load" question, since I rarely pull anything...a flat-out level 4 run from 0-95 (dernit...wish I could at least have 100mph braggin' rights! ) will hit the 1250 mark, but only once has it crept up to 1300 (97 degrees, 85% humidity, 115 degree heat index...ah, that's Houston!). Haven't tried a level 4 tow/haul scramble yet...reckon it's time! :D

Thanks Diva,

By the way, who installed your gauges?
