I just had the luxury of testdriving 2 2002's a 2003 and 2004 Duramax equiped trucks with my service manager while trying to compare a shuddering problem Iam suffering with on my truck. We both noticed and agreed the 03 and 04's are quite a bit louder at idle and while driving. Also the 02's idle aroung 500RPM while the 03/04 are at 700RPM. Does anyone know what was changed? I feel jipped! Nice of GM to sneak this in.

Mine also seems to idle right at about the 700 RPM mark. I've got one of JK's systems on it so can't really talk about how quiet it is :D Still better than my neighbors 98 Cummins

Just picked up my new '04. My '01 is gone but the new one seems a good deal quieter.

I have had my '04 for a week now, put 900 miles on it and I can say it is definately quieter than the old 2002 (My father in-law has it now.). I just can't wait until the '04 starts putting out the power of the '02. Fuel milage out of the box has been better on the '04 (dic says 17.9) the '02 was getting 14 or so when I first got it. I guess I'll live with a quieter truck with better fuel milage if I have to. :D :D

My '03 is louder than my old '01. No question about that. Both idle at the same speed- ~ 650-700 on the tach.

The '01 and '02 trucks had some sort of tar or sound deadener on the bottom of the engine- the '03s do not. There seem to be differences in the throttle response when comparing the trucks. The '03 has more throttle response, among other things. I think all of these things contribute to the increase in noise.

I feel the '03 runs MUCH nicer than my '01 ever did. I'll take a little extra noise for a better runing engine any day.
