Onboard Oil % on 2004 Duramax

How accurate is the OIL LIFE % on the Display system on a 2004 SLT Duramax 4x4? Right now Im at 3k miles and still shows like 79% oil life left. Is it safe to go off this or better to still change every 5k or so miles??

the new 2004 (lly) manual says to change the oil at 10K..... the % meter is based on engine hours! if its your first change do it ASAP ,do the rear end and transfer case now ! the trans filter should be done at 5k so its as good time as any. the 10K oil life is based on NON exstream conditions. the newer motor can go more mile on a oil change due to lower emissions that dont contaminate the oil.
