Going for updates tomorrow, any tips

to get service manager on my side. Have no updates at this point. I just don't want a fight with service manager.

Also getting leaking rear dif fixed.

There have been updates for false trouble codes, so that should help you on the ECM updates.

There is also a TCM update as well.

A good dealer will do these, and knows how to word it on the invoice to GM. IIRC, they can bill nearly .5hr per box, so it isn't like they are not getting paid.

There may also be an update for the BCM (body control...) that pertains to vehicle doors locking in automatic car washes...

I have told the service manager on the phone I have shifting issues, that should get the tcm update and if I tell them about false trouble codes that should get me the ecm update.

How should I word the false trouble code problem. I have never had a false code problem that I am aware of.

How come your doing updates any particular reason? My only problem thus far that perhaps an update will fix is the cold idle .... I'm Not mentioning the word ......... I won't do it personally for that reason alone ...... Not to discourage but I'll live by the old proverb. If it aint broke don't fix it ........

Well I agree with you, I have been advised to get the updates for better Juice performance. I do not plan to advertize that I am full of Juice as of yesterday but I am ;) . I am hoping this is the right decision. What do you think.

GM fixed a bug related to the OBDII port. Almost evertime I connected my AutoTap I would get a diagnostic error code. Sure enough GM had a software update for it. There's a smoking gun for ya. ;) :D

Although I don't have the most recent updates, I have been very pleased with the ones I did get.

Have you ever had the need or opportunity to use the block heater? You might try stating that on a ski trip you plugged it in and had a SES set or something like that, and upon investigation was told it was likely the fuel temp sensor not jiving...

At this point, I would not hesitate to do ANY of the existing updates regardless of model year.

From what I've seen on previous dyno runs, the numbers are likely a bit low due to tire slippage. When I hit the second box, it sounds AND FEELS like I added a half a Dmax to the equation. My narrow 235's dont help much. They are, or should I say WERE siped for extra bite. Maverick's dually showed how valuable contact area can be...

I am a newbie to the diesel world and just own my 3500 for 2 weeks now. I have a 32' trailer on order and will start towing it in about 5 weeks. I'm not sure what all the talk about updates is about. Can someone explain this to me?? BTW, my truck has a build date of 3/27/02 if that tells anything about the need for updates.

First diesel, you may not need any updates because your truck is so new.

We do racecars and both the wife and I drive. We got tired of towing one and driving one to the racetrack so we went for broke. Truck and trailer!!! Turned the big 50 this year and the wife hit and unnamed milestone too so we bought each other the new toys for our birthdays!!

How do I find out if I need any updates and what they are?? Is there a listing of them somewhere??

Can you give me a hint what the stuff means?? When I enter my VIN I get a list of about 5 different items. Is it possible a truck built on 3/27/02 could need 5 different updates already?? I'm really lost about this stuff. Nothing says anything about the Allison updates and I read everyone talking about those.

Well, first off what you could do is copy paste and post what up dates are available for your particular truck .....I or the BIG GUNS here do not have access to your vin # ..... What is there is what is available, any previous you have all ready received at GM at your build ...... The BIG guns here will try and let you know what issues they address ...... If they can ........

is a Texas truck w/o CA emissions.

All that doesn't mean anything to boost your performance, or change much for you. Kinda routine stuff, you could do when your in for service .... Or mind you they will do it. Probably without you knowing it ..... Especially if they spot a relevant code stored ...... The TCM updates if available should or would be there. So apparently N/A ...... You have a 02 ,so it is probably up to date ........

I was kinda surprised none popped up on my vin since I've never done any, there is a few for my truck I believe in my 01 May build date ...... Not that I will . But what happened? Wonder if for some reason they pulled the plug on it on that calibration site ......

purchased my '02 3500 D'max in October of '01...according to my dealer, no updates are due????

I did mine in early May. There was a "false trouble codes" update (pertains to the Fuel temp sensor/block heater issue) and I also did the TCM which had a "Fast Learn" update.

If you can get the dealer to do them, I am in favor of doing all updates to date...

Coincidentally, the updates were done on the way out of town leaving for the Rendezvous. When I started up to pull in at the dealer, the low oil light came on. When done with the updates it was off and never returned...

When I run my VIN I get the following message:

Does that mean there are no updates for my truck, or that my VIN isn't on record, or that I don't have a PCM or VCM?

My guess is your entering it wrong. A 1 instead of an I or something like that. Check the VIN again and see if you missed a digit or changed one.

Nope, that's not the problem. I've checked and rechecked it. I'm typing my VIN in exactly as it is on the bill of sale, which matches the VIN plate. No record of my VIN in that system.

Any ideas? Am I driving a mirage?

I remember someone saying that it takes awhile for a VIN to get listed after the truck is sold...
might be your prob.

I looked mine up about 2 weeks after I bought it and it was there. I don't see why when you buy it should matter. I would think the deciding factor might be how long since it was built. Mine was built on 3/27/02 and I found it in the lookup on about 5/27.
