Is the 'Change Fuel Filter' message on the dash triggered by restriction, or by mileage?

I have already changed mine once - probably time to change again, but wondering for future reference.

How do you reset it, once the change is done?

Is it on your 2001? Mine has never come on so I would guess it is a "restriction thing".

Mileage only. At 15k I think the filter will be restricting quite a bit.

Changed at 12K miles, so only about 2500 on new filter.

How does one reset the message, JK?

Per my 06 owner's manual:
Steering wheel controls - Hold the select button for 5 seconds while the fuel filter life message is displayed.
Without steering wheel controls - Ignition key ot ON, wait 5 seconds, press brake and accelerator and hold for 10 seconds, ignition key off.

Thanks, Dick. I finally found that same info in the Diesel Supplement tonight. All done.

How often are people changing their LB7/LLY fuel filters with the newer dual-element OEMs?

10K would be about every 700 gallons of fuel. That seems excessive.

15K would be about every 1000 gallons of fuel.

I thinks with the miles we are putting on - we'll change them when the reminder comes on.

Thoughts?

My thought is measure the restriction on a new filter and check periodically over the service life. Yes, I know my gauge is $$$ but it's much better than what your dealer will have and worth every penny when filter restriction is suspect. I've had filters load up in 2k or less recently. I met a guy in UT who had 15 k on his filter and was "limping" in for service. He was setting P01093 codes/limp mode due to a severely restricted filter. New filter restriction is 2"hg or less. His was 12"hg+.

More than a few have been "hooked" and towed or limped to the dealer only to have the filter restriction be the culprit. Warranty doesn't cover maintenance (or lack thereof) and poor/dirty fuel quality.

Filters are cheap compared to the fuel system components they protect...

My friend thought he "hurt" his 2001 a while back...dirty fuel filter.

Will my 02 give this message or is it on the newer trucks?

Only 05 as I understand. Not sure about 04.5 models.

This must only be on the newer trucks 2005 with automatics.

I have a 2005, but I have the 6sp and I have never seen this come up on my dash nor seen it on the predator nor the auto enginuity software I bought to help trouble shoot problems.

I have 20,000 miles on mine now. Change fuel filter at 12,000 intervals at the moment.

How do you like the Auto Enginuity tool? Have you tried disabling individual injectors? I also have a predator but have been considering the Auto Enginuity as it appears to have more diagnostic and control capability

No, I haven't tried to do that yet.

So far I like the software. I like the ability to set up and monitor the balance rates (as an example) and store the results. You then have a running tab of what your engine is doing as it as mileage increases.

You can only save 9 test conditions at a time, but it saves these up in individual files which are easy to recall. I figure if anything goes wrong I can show these to a mechanic helping them to diagnose whatever the problem is.

Right now, I'm a bit hesitant to try out the control capablity. I'm worried that I might screw something up.

If there was someone around that had this experience and wanted to try it out on my truck, that would be okay.
