    How does this hose come off?

    The hoses attach to plastic quick connectors at the firewall. They can crack and leak. You'll need the tool to disengage the connector from the core inlet/outlet.

    Unable to pull obd1 codes

    The GMTD Scan software will make this a moot point, but I'm curious what method you're using to get codes using a paperclip - i.e. key ON.
