loss of tack,power stearing and power brakes

After getting a way from home this morning, i noticed a slight miss off and on in the 95 6.5. A few miles down the road The missing stopped and the battery light came on and the tack stopped working and I lost my power brakes and power steering. I pulled of the road and checked my battery cables and everything there was fine. I started the engine and it ran fine but I still had the battery light on and no power steering or power brakes. I headed back home and I noticed the alternator showed no charging and the temp gauge was running high. I made it home and when I checked the alternator it had no output. When I returned home this afternoon I checked for error codes and the only one that came up was a 36. I believe that with the alternator not working that this will cause the tack to not work but the loss of power brakes and power steering has me stumped. Does anyone have any ideas on where to start. I have another alternator from my parts car to put on so I will start with that.

This is a stupid question, but you still have your serpentine belt, don’t you? No belt to drive the alternator and power steering and vacuum pump would be the only thing I’d think of that would connect the three things.

Talk about not being able to see the forest for the trees. I really feel stupid now. The serpentine belt was off. It didn't look damaged and all of the pulleys seem to be fine so I don't know why it would have come off. THANK YOU Trbankii for getting me back on track.

Been there myself! As you say, can’t see the forest for the trees.

These conversations usually start with “Isn’t there supposed to be something right about there?” (pointing to missing belt, wire, hose, component, tire, etc)

Worked on the diesel today and found the problem causing the belt to come off. At first glance every thing looked OK. all of the pulleys did not seem to have any play in them so I put the belt back on. I started the engine and I noticed that the power steering pump pulley was hitting the idler and then the belt popped of before I got the engine shut down. After further investigating I found the power steering pump to be missing the 2 studs and nuts on the back of it and the bracket going back to the engine block had no bolt in it at the block. It has been a few years since I had done anything with the power steering pump so if It was caused by one of the extra parts that I have had left over in the past then that explains it. The nice part was I was able to go over to my parts car and remove the pump so no need to have to buy another.

I'm having sort of the same problem now with my tach not working. I took my alternator to have it tested today and it came back fine so i asked the question of, "hey you know anything about the 6.5 diesel and the alternator running the tach" and i got a blank stare. Once i explained the situation of how it's supposed to work he asks me, "well is the belt still hooked up?" i just walked away.
