Just filled up my 2001 GMC in anticipation of a surge in price due to the mishandling of the oil market (Saudis reducing production). Paid $4.99/gallon - 10/11/2022
$5.38 for diesel at a discount station in southern oregon. 10/12/22
Are people seeing the prices in California? Newsome thinks the oil companies are price gouging... and the high prices have nothing to do with CA's extreme environmental regulations, #1 highest petroleum taxes in the nation (see below) or limits/bans on new/upgrading petroleum infrastructure.
Quote:
1. California
State Fuel Tax: 68.15¢ per gallon of gasoline (70.95¢ per gallon effective July 1, 2022), 99.91¢ per gallon of diesel (102.01¢ per gallon effective July 1, 2022)
Average Sales Tax: 7.25% state levy. Localities can add as much as 2.5%, and the average combined rate is 8.82%, according to the Tax Foundation.
In the past week and a half, diesel here went from $4.19 up to $5.39 and is back down to $4.89 this morning. Prices have been all over the place!

The place I have been going to recently has been off of Gas Buddy for a few days. It's a little out of the way, so today I went up there to see what was up. When I went to enter the prices in Gas Buddy I got a warning "The price you've entered seems a little high..." $5.89. Cheapest is $4.99, 12 miles away...
$5.09 this morning; up from $4.19 less than 2 weeks ago! Just so weird how prices are all over the place, and from station to station.

In Haines Junction $2.309 for Diesel,1.909 for regular canadien
Last trip to Haines Alaska $6.849 Diesel $5.899 Regular
Went by the $4.99 station this AM. It was 5.19
Filled up our car and our 2001 GMC the other day... Unleaded regular gas was $3.98. Diesel #2 was $5.44. So... diesel fuel is $1.46 a gallon more expensive than gasoline! This is nuts. It's not like the US economy runs on diesel fuel...
It's worse here! While fuel is cheaper, the spread between regular gasoline and diesel is further apart. Regular gas at my favorite station is $3.03 and diesel is $4.99. This crazy difference in prices is really making me doubt being a diesel owner for the first time in 27 years. I've had a 6.2L or 6.5L as a daily driver for all of those 27 years, but if this stupid spread between gasoline and diesel continues to persist, I may be looking at getting a gasoline daily driver, which makes me really sad. I'm a diesel lover through and through. But the past few years it's been harder and harder to justify owning a diesel, as most of the benefits of diesel ownership have slowly been eroded away.

Recent fuel costs are no accident. This is absolutely by design. Many politicians and activists have said as much, to include a former president. It was a matter of time and opportunity.
I remember a discussion we had here, maybe 10 or 20 years ago, about the cost difference between gas and Diesel. At the time, Diesel was still quite a bit less than gas. The suggestion was that, at some time in the future, the power that be would be equating the cost of motor fuels with their BTU content. Not long after, the taxes on Diesel went up, exceeding that of gas, and the cost of Diesel began rising above gas. Here we are today, with the concept out of control. As I recall, what we see today is what we thought would happen, despite the deniers (I was one, I think). As with most things, once .gov gets their claws into something, fat chance turning it back. Everything to an extreme, as far as they can run it.
We have a jackazz that keeps reporting $4.99 Diesel to gasbuddy, but it's never true. I don't know if he's an idiot or just evil. Anyhow, we're pushing up closer and closer to $6.00 here. There's gonna be a lot of cold houses this winter... Heating oil is already in tight supply. The dealers are refusing to take on new customers.
Nine days till reckoning.
Foreign policy (such as it is) is driving the increase in cost differential between gas/diesel, and is having a huge affect on winter heating oil and a rise in the cost of LNG. They're shipping it to Europe to fight Putin. Europe doesn't want our gasoline.
A sidebar about the cost differential between gas/diesel... Prior to the introduction of ULSD in 2007, the US petro market couldn't export diesel fuel to Europe because they were ahead of us in diesel fuel emissions regulations. That all changed in 2007 with the introduction of ULSD here in the US - not surprisingly, EU's diesel fuel regs matched those in the US almost perfectly. As a result, the US diesel fuel market suddenly became a world-wide commodity.
Diesel is at $3.99 this morning in SW Missouri!!

I paid $3.59 for diesel last night! Only spent $80 for a full tank of fuel. It's been running north of $115 to fill up for months now. Thankful to see the lower prices finally.

$4.38 at Loves with their discount, Klamath Falls Oregon.
What is up with the wild spread in prices between gasoline and diesel? Gasoline has dropped significantly around here, averaging below $3 per gallon, while at the same time diesel prices have risen. This morning, my favorite fuel station had gas at $2.99 and diesel at $4.89! What's going on?

I would have thought all the excitement in Israel would have set the futures market on fire. I track prices in my area and see my local TA change fuel price 3 times a day. Used to be pricing was either LIFO or FIFO but now seams to me some form of dynamic pricing.
Gas 2.73 - 3.25
Diesel 3.69 - 4.29
I just paid $5 a gallon for diesel here in southern oregon
