Thread: All diesel fuel treatment users.....?

1. #1
Maverick Guest

Question

Just taking a poll here......

Has anyone using any brand of diesel fuel treatment/conditioner had any injector or injector pump problems? Please reply only if you have been using the additive for at least 75% of the vehicles mileage. Please reply if you have had problems or have not. What brand? Trying to see if I can find a pattern if treatment really helps the fuel system.

I have had a 1980 1500, 1982,1992,1998,all diesels, and presently own 2002 DM. Have always used Stanadyne Perf. Formula and never replaced any injectos or pumps. All vehicles were kept well past 100,000 miles. My dealership always recommended it and still does. This is a truck only dealer and I think most people with diesel related problems come from car orientated dealerships that are not used to dealing with this type of equipment.

I had an 85 VW Golf Diesel that I purchased new. Sold it about a year ago with 180kmi. Never had a problem with the injection system. I always added PowerService to the fuel and changed the filter every year.
In my 98 6.5 I ran Power Service then switched to Standyne Performance formula and a dash of two-cycyle oil (after joining this page in 99). Just sold it with 65kmiles with original pump, PMD and injectors. Never had a single problem with driveability. One thing I also do is never let the fuel level drop below

I have 17,000+ miles on my 2002 DA 2500HD. I started using Howes Meaner Power Cleaner in every tank at about 2000 miles. Product states that it contains no alcohol and is rated "superior" by Cummins L-10 test specifications. I buy it at Flying J for about $10 per quart. Use one oz. per 8 gal. of fuel. To date, my average speed on truck is 45.5 MPH and average MPG is 17.6 including some towing and some town driving. I am pleased with the Howes product and have experienced no engine related problems with my truck.

I realize that 17,000+ trouble free miles is nothing to brag about. We can brag when we hit 200,000+ miles without a problem.

28,000 miles, Stanadyne "Blue" for the first 4,000 miles, FPPF Total Power since.

When I'm NOT using fuel additive, my trucks does the lope thing (RPCV bad- 10-00 engine build date, early pump). As soon as I add additive, the lope dissappears.

Otherwise, ZERO problems. If I can only get my SM to change out my RPCV, everything will be peachy in DMaxland.

The reason for this question is I had an injector replaced at 98K on my 01' 3500. The signs of this was a blueish smoke from the exhaust. I have now noticed some more heavy exhaust. No real color or anything yet. I am almost at 107,000 now. Yesterday I topped off and dumped a bottle of Standyne One Shot Performance Formula. It treats 30 gals. I have never used any treatment before this. I can honestly say it did run smoother and pick-up on the throttle was faster. Don't really know if my exhaust cleared up with it becausr I burned up 50 gals of fuel that day. I know where I can buy Standyne locally but know nothing about this Total Power. How much is this compared to the S brand?

Have used FPPF since new put it in every fll up have 23000Km = 14000miles every thing OK COST IN CANADA $15 each for a case of 12 Stanadyne $23 for 1. As posted previously I cut the filter in half bottom half was dirty black top half was discolored white.

you must have bought a watered down version of the product (no pun intended) but the one bottle of either product is good for 250 gallons not one tank full, based on articals I have read too much additive is not good.

good luck

Another vote for Howes. I have 52500 on my 2001 with no fuel or injector problems. Howes will also pay the tow if your fuel gels. They also claim there is no problem if you use too much.

Letsgo,
If you go to this link- http://www.mwfi.com/descript_perf_form.htm -you will see the ONE SHOT bottle listed as an 8oz. 30gal treatment. I will assume you didn't know about this size bottle and you were refering to the 1/2 gal size which treats 240 gals. Also in the notes at the bottom of the page this is said-"All Stanadyne Diesel Fuel Additives can be blended with each other and "double-dosing" is not damaging - although it may not provide twice the benefit."

Mudflap,
Do you notice any difference performance wise as to how the Howes breaks up water and runs it through the system to be burned?

The quart bottle stands and 250 gal is what each will treat, it is set up for the truckers, have never seen 1/2 gallon containers, I saw some 4 oz NO NAME bottles at a place called Canadian Tire $5 each, There is a product called Kleen Flow , it has no centain and when I last looked they did not print product%%% on any literature BUT they have a good sales pitch.

I might add there are a few manufacturing webs that state you can upset the diesel fuel make up by adding fuel additives.

The "8 percent" increase in fuel milage is incorrect, It should read the bottle content is 8 centain, the two manufacturers state gas milage should increase, but have reservations.

Good Luck

I too use the howe's injector cleaner, Have 20000
trouble free miles. I to use it about every 3rd fill-up and seem to get a little better performance for that tank of fuel. The reason i use it is it worked well in my peterbilt trucks. 3500000 on my 96 and 458000 on my 99, never had injector problems, but ran the new cat 2 micron filters since the day they came out...

Been using LUCAS for 30,000 miles at about 60% of the time. No problems, but usually can only find it at truck stops.

It says on the bottle "Winter Fuel Treatment"

Is this something you can use in the summer too?
