It may have higher hp/torque but it won't do much for ya if it doesn't run. Just an article for some of those who were thinking of switching trucks. Dave

    Ford's new diesel has problems
6.0 Power Stroke is important test

    By Amy Wilson
    Automotive News / March 03, 2003

DETROIT - Ford Motor Co. is acknowledging that some of its crucial new 6.0-liter diesel engines have a defective sensor, leading to bucking and stalling in cold weather.

Since November, the company has sold more than 18,000 trucks with the engine, which Ford calls the Power Stroke, at prices that can reach $40,000 or more.

The engine, which is produced by International Truck and Engine Corp., is available in F-250 and F-350 full-sized pickups and in the Excursion SUV.

"A small percentage of Power Strokes have been experiencing a variety of different problems," Ford spokeswoman Becky Bach says. "But we've been working with our dealers, and we think we have a way to address most of the issues."

She wouldn't specify the number of trucks affected. The most common problem seems to be a defective injection control pressure sensor. That has caused such problems as bucking, lurching, black smoke and stalling in cold weather.

A new sensor went to the factory and to service departments during the first week in February, Bach says, and that seems to be fixing those problems.

Dealers, customers and suppliers have reported a variety of other problems, including oil leaks, fuel injector failures and turbocharger failures, but it's not clear how prevalent those glitches are.

Ford didn't comment on those reports.

The 6.0-liter Power Stroke is an important test for Ford in the competitive light-duty diesel market. Ford has led that segment in recent years, but General Motors and Dodge have been gaining ground with recent engine introductions. Buyers of diesel trucks, often used as work vehicles, are among the most loyal customers in the market.

Ford predicts that it will sell more than 200,000 trucks with the 6.0-liter Power Stroke annually.

Executives have said they expect annual sales to be about 40,000 higher with the new engine than with the previous 7.3-liter Power Stroke.

At the Chicago Auto Show, Jim Padilla, Ford North America president, said Ford expects to increase

F-series sales to more than 1 million with the help of the new Power Stroke.

Ford says the engine has better fuel economy, lower emissions, less noise and more power than the 7.3-liter diesel.

One dealer who has been plagued with 6.0-liter Power Stroke problems says Ford has responded more quickly to this problem than to any glitch in the past. But it still has been a rough introduction, says Randy Fuller, dealer partner at Fullers' White Mountain Motors in Show Low, Ariz. Of 12 trucks at his dealership, eight have been affected, he says.

Says Fuller: "Once they get the bugs worked out, this thing is just a powerhouse engine. But the launch has been less than sterling."

Dont't forget, we've had many d-max people with early problems too, I've been very lucky with mine, I only hope this aluminum head dream does not over heat, then everyone could end up looking for another engine or truck.

On the contrary, the Dmax introduction has been amazingly trouble free. There've been a few lemons here and there, and some piddly problems, but no major systemic flaws except perhaps, the inadequate fuel filter. Have you been lurking long enough here, Big Wheel, to have seen Broker's experiences with several Dmax trucks in commercial service, each racking up hundreds of thousands of miles? Or have you been influenced by the Dmax trashing on the Ford and Dodge sites? There have been NO reliable reports of problems with the aluminum heads.

It is puzzling, though, that several people have reported low power on '03s. Since I don't recall hearing these complaints about '01/'02 models, I'm guessing that these problems will eventually be traced to a small change in this year's model (e.g.,APP sensor). If you are one of these, stay tuned; I'm sure that a solution will be found.

Lets also not forget this engine, with different fuel supply, was in Heavier application for over a year prior to it's intro into the Super Duty.....

Mac is correct. Most of the 6.0 problems are limited to the Ford Powerstroke version of this engine. Which uses Ford spec'd electronics and fuel system. Once they get their act together it should be a serious engine. When drivetrain testing for their trucks Ford had a 6.0 truck that put down 687 HP and over 1100lbft. at the rear wheels. TS Performance has had a 6.0 since November and are having no problem getting big power out of it. Also that they can't break the new auto and the torque converter showed no signs of wear when they inspected the tranny to see how it would hold up.

Sorry "Studly" gonna keep it. I had enough morons e-mail offers of $500 bucks, what are these people smoking anyway ? I even had one asswipe offer me $300 and then proceed to tell me how inferior the Juice is ! I wish I could post the e-mail he got back but I would get booted ! Untill I can use all the power all the time the 230hp box is going back, just can't justify the $1500 bucks...Yet...I gotta nother plan to make about 60, 70 more hp combined with the Hot Juice...For whatever reason my truck does not have the limp mode problems some others do. I'm looking for that "fine line" then I will stay there till a tranny fix comes along...Then my grand kids can enjoy it !
