My manual says that the 2500HD hitch with the towing package is rated at 7500 lbs with
    1000 lbs tongue weight.

    Is this correct?

I am a bit upset about this since I fully expected the hitch to be able to handle 12K lbs with 1.2K tongue weight like the Ford 250 SuperDuty.

    Thanks

Trailer weight rating for the 8.1L and Duramax equipped trucks is 12,000 lbs with a suitable weight-distributing hitch. The fifth-wheel tow rating can be computed by subtracting the weight of the truck and cargo from the Gross Combination Vehicle Weight Rating (GCWR) of 22,000 lbs. This means a standard cab 2500HD is rated to tow a 5th-wheel of nearly 16,000 lbs. Extended cab and crew cab trucks are rated proportionally lower due to the increased weight of these trucks.

I think he meant the hitch itself, not the truck.

Yes AlaskaDmax, I did mean the hitch itself.

So what is the correct rating?

    bora,

There is a label on the hitch receiver itself that should read.

    Weight-carrying cap. 7500lbs W/1000lbs tongue weight.

    Weight-distributing cap. 12000lbs W/1500lbs tongue weight.

If you use a weight-distributing hitch you will be fine.
