2004 L and 2004.5 Y Whats the difference?

Can someone break it down? I want to know which one is best DURAMAX 6.6 L or 6.6 Y motors?
I don't need to know about the government ratings or GM's reasoning for the Y. How does the 2004 rate against the 2004.5 (the "Y" Motor) Durability, horsepower, gas mileage, etc.
I say with the exception of one (1) horsepower of difference in 2nd and 3rd gears, the "Y" is coming up short. Thoughts gentlemen? I would appreciate some real-time users imput.
