The only problem I know of is the abysmal fuel mileage you'll get.
However, with widening price gap between unleaded gasoline and #2 diesel, it might make more sense than it did a year ago to burn gasoline, especially if don't put on many miles, tow lightly, or tow infrequently but heavy. If you put on lots of miles, tow heavy, and/and frequently, the Dmax diesel will win out everytime.
Wester's Garage does offer a performance tune for this engine. They don't respond as much to mods as diesels, but you might find some small mileage and performance gains with the traditional exhaust, intake and ECM reflashes.

broken exhaust manifold bolts , intakes that leak causeing it to burn oil. these are common items but thats about it.

I have a 2002 C/C Dually with the 8.1 and Allison. It has 38,000 miles. I haven't had one problem with it. The mileage isn't the greatest but it is really reliable. I only use it to tow a trailer.
