    Default 5 Speed from an S-10 in 1985 K10 6.2?

    My 700R4 appears to be bad. I am wondering if a 5 speed from a 4.3 S-10 4x4would work? What came in the S-10? NV4500? These trannies are cheap at the JY. Would they hold up with a turbo 6.2 in front?

    It won't hold up without a turbo. Not a chance. Not a NV4500, either. And, we haven't begun discussing clutch options (there won't be one).

    One good 700R4 rebuild won't cost more than a couple JY trannies, and you get to stay out from under your rig for a while. Converting from auto to manual (or the other way around) is no picnic, either. A conversion will cost more ($ and knuckle hide) than getting the tranny done right.

    I've done a 700R4 to SM465 conversion and it was very straightforward. The worst part of the whole job was swapping the clutch/brake pedal bracket. My donor truck was a gasser so I had to get a flywheel from a salvage yard. A donor truck is definitely a good idea, although less important if you're installing a hydraulic clutch. But to get back on topic, I gotta agree with DMaxMaverick - this is something you don't want to touch with a 10' pole. If your K10 is stock it most likely has 3.08 gears, and combined with a good 700R4 and tires in the 30"-31" range should give you around 20mpg if driven sensibly, i.e., doing everything you can to eliminate black smoke. Fuel prices are high enough now that you'll probably save money by running at a higher tire pressure for decreased rolling resistance even though that means accelerated wear in the center of the tread. Consider replacing injectors if they have over 100K on them, or at the very least pull them out and have them tested because a poor spray pattern means wasted fuel.
