97 6.5td P0216 code



My Van is getting a P0216 code on the timing when the code comes the engine gets noisy most of the time it will come back in timing. My question is there is a stepper motor that adjust the timing could this be the problem or should I be looking for some other problem. The problem is getting worse every day. ( will this condition damage the engine ) The injector pump has 173,000 km on it and the engine has about 30,000 km engine I replaced new due to cracked block.

Could be one of two things here.

The stepper motor on the engine is failing and or poor electrical connection to it.

Or, the engine is out of time where the motor cannot compensate, requiring a retime.

A scan tool is almost necessary to find out what the timing value is before moving the pump.
