how would i adapt this engine to a transmission? It would probably cost a fortune to have something custom made.

Well, I think the simplest way would be to mock up an adapter plate from marine plywood. Use the SAE bell that's probably on it now to locate the mounting holes, crank flange opening/rear main seal retainer, and starter opening. Then bolt it to the block and get the transmission properly located so it's concentric to the crank centerline and you have proper engagement of the pump drive (automatic) or pilot bearing (manual.) Once you have everything the way it needs to be, bring the mockup to a machine shop and have them make it from aluminum. Check multiple times and be absolutely certain because once it's made, it's made, and any mistakes will most likely mean paying for a new one.

That's a fine little engine; what do you intend to put it into?

CAUTION: DO NOT change the location of the injector line brackets (unless you like engineroom fires)

They sure are, I'd take one of these over a 4BT any day of the week. (Actually a T4.236 over a 4BT.) When I worked at the Hyster dealership we'd see plenty of Perkins with over 10K hours in old Hyster machines like H80Cs, P-trucks, Z90s, and I-R VR90s, but by the time a 4BT in a newer IR like a VR642 or VR843 had 2500 hours they tended to sound like a can full of marbles in a paint shaker. Bigger forklifts, such as H250XLs, H360XLs, etc, had a 6T.354 that would really make that big machine get up & move. For a while we had a WACO (Western Attachment Co) lift truck in our rental fleet that had the gasoline version of the 4.236.

Yeah, a 4-236 NA is, IIRC, around 110 HP. Greatly understressed when NA
