Default I am thinking about grabbing a Ford built diesel engine, input needed

I have a 1968 Ford crew cab and a Cummins I planned to mate together. However, I recently found a Ford built straight six diesel engine. I think it is for a marine application. Anyhoo, I sure would love to drop a Ford engine in that old Ford pickup. Here is the problem, I know nothing about them. I barely know enough about the Cummins to drop it in and get it running. The Ford engine is really the way I would like to go but I have to make sure it will fit my needs. I have been all over the internet trying to locate information but I think I am looking in the wrong areas. Can someone please guide or help me with this. My window on buying the engine is closing and I have to make a well informed decision quick.

These are the only numbers I have from the Ford engine:

    REF 5503
    TYPE 212C
1995 Ford F350 Crew Cab Dually with a 7.3 liter Powerstroke
198? Chevy aircraft tugger with a 6.2 liter "Tugger"

Without actually seeing the engine I'm going to guess it's either an FD1060 or FD1460, hopefully that's enough to get you going.

    If it's a 6.6, here's more information:

If would be an interesting swap if you end up doing it.

Thanks for the link. I think is would be oh so cool to have that Ford engine in my 68 Ford. But the the Cummins would be sooooooooooo much cheaper. I am torn here.

You might try a search under "Ford Leahman". Very popular marine engines. Also used as industrial engines and in a few bus/automotive applications. Both Volvo and OMC used to use the 4 and 6 cyl versions with their outdrives. Very popular with the trawler crowd because of their fuel economy. As far as I know, they used the conventional Bosch pumps so an automotive equiv would be easy to locate.

I learned something from this thread - that the FD1060 & FD1460 are just the Cummins 5.9l & 8.3l, and that our '87 F600 avgas truck, which according to the VIN has the 1060, was apparently repowered with a 6.6l atcsome time. That sheet metal valve cover ain't no Cummins LOL

Thanks. I will check them out.

After I started looking and asking I have found these engines to be more common than I thought.
