Thread: Weatherproof boost / EGT gauge package?

  1. #1

Default Weatherproof boost / EGT gauge package?

I have a wild hare to mount boost and EGT gauges OUTSIDE of the cab on the driver's side plastic 'faux hood vent' of my 2009 LMM Duramax...

The more I envision it, the more I am certain that the old school look of hood mounted mechanical gauges iswhat I want to do - even if gauge life is shortened due to rain, snow, and car washes.

Any ideas for a pair of rugged, (somewhat) weatherproof, and backlit gauges - enclosed in a black ABS plastic mount?

I've never heard of weatherproof boost/EGT gages. I would enclose and seal them from the elements. You should have some options for an enclosure. Consider a submersible camera enclosure. They are available in many sizes/shapes. Or, make your own. All you really need is a box with a clear face cover. Other things to consider may be venting (prevent fogging/frosting, maybe include a heat source), sun exposure (UV damage), refractory/reflective light effects, etc. You could also seal an enclosure against the windshield.

For marine gauges, you could try companies like Teleflex, Faria and Livorsi. Maybe even try a box store like West Marine.

I agree that venting would definitely be a consideration. However, since you have to run wires through the hood... I would think that the heat that transfers up through those holes (from the engine) would be enough? You'd want to find an appropriate spot on the pod to create an "exhaust" vent hole, though. Maybe use a "clamshell" to basically make the vent hole a "one way" hole.

Be sure to use a good silicone - around boats, I like using BoatLife's Life Seal (made in the USA, too!), but there are others that are good, as well.

    I think it'd look nice!
