Question VIN check and build sheet (pretty please)

I am planning to buy 2006 Chevy Duramax crew-cab 3500 4x4 w/ Allison transmission. Last step is to make sure VIN check doesn't turn up anything horrible. Does anyone have time and capability to run a VIN check for me. Also, I would really like to see the truck's factory build report.

The VIN number is 1GCJK33D96F259705. One last question: the 8th letter "D" in the VIN --- does this POSITIVELY mean this truck is a mid-year 2006 with an LBZ engine (not an earlier 2006 truck whose engine is sometimes referred to in this forum as a "detuned LLY)?

    Thanks in advance.

PS I'm done window shopping; this is the TRUCK; and I definetly intend to purchase it if no alarming repairs show up on the VIN check. I say this so you will know that your effort to obtain the requested information for me won't be in vain; that I'm not just "playing" around or dreaming about owning a DuramAx one day. Thanks again.

Default Piston replacement??? Oh me oh my!!

Gm Tech: thank you so much for running VIN and build reports. I'm pretty flabbergasted about the "piston replacement at 3800 miles. Dealership reported to me orally about bad things on VIn check (over the phone); and called this event an "O ring replacement. So, wow, that piston replacement so early on does freak me out: but since no other piston- related failure shows up, should I be freaked? Maybe issue wad fixed early on, never to return? I plan on running stock. One thing that makes me feel a little safer is that dealer told me name of original owner who bought the truck from them and just traded it in. Small world-- I knew the guy (slightly) from back in my misspent youth!! So I called him (he lives in a small town and his number was easy to track down; he said truck has been a wonderful truck with only "small" issues all fixed under warranty and that it ran great and stout pulling his loaded six horse trailer. He said he had to make the decision to sell it prior to hitting 100k (so his trade in value wouldn't plummet--or go ahead and keep it til around 250k when all the little things would start needing upkeep (knobs, belts, hoses, window motors, that type of thing). He said he was really torn about selling it but wife wanted a new one. Now, he had no reason to lie; he had already traded it in; bought the new one. So--opinions anyone?

Something is out of place with that machine. Just a hunch. Brake pads, piston, both under 5,000 miles.

    Question

When GMTech so graciously ran the VIN check for me on a truck I am seriously considering purchasing, he found several engine-related and mechanical-related entries, the most alarming of which is as follows
    *******
    12/15/2006 048154 ZREG----Regular Vehicle Transaction J1300 - Piston, Rod And/Or Rings - One Cyl - Right Bank - Replace 3,884 MI
    12/15/2006 048154 ZREG----Regular Vehicle Transaction T2020 - Towing 3,884 MI
    ********
Armed with that information, I called the dealership who has the truck for sale (same dealership who originally sold the truck and where the original and only owner of the truck had always had it serviced (and where the original owner traded it back in for a new truck at 90k miles). I had the dealership pull the actual repair records and notes, and this is what I found:While the owner's wife was driving down the road in this almost brand new truck, she heard a horrible screeching noise coming from the engine and she immediately pulled over and turned off the engine. She then had the truck towed in to the dealership for repair and they found that a glow plug tip had broken off, and had fallen down into one of the pistons. Because it had damaged the piston (scratched up its insides), the dealership replaced that piston (at 3884 miles), along with replacing the broken glow plug, of course. I understand from my research and reading in this forum that tips breaking off glow plugs is a fairly common problem with these 2006-2007 model trucks, and so I am not unduly concerned about it happening or the resulting piston replacement. I don't think that means this truck is a lemon. But, i would welcome anybody to step in and advise me that I am being delusional, and that i should DEFINITELY PASS on purchasing this truck.

As far as NutNButGM's comment about the inexplicable brake pad replacement at only 2532 miles, as shown on the VIN report entry, below:
    *******
    "884 MI 11/25/2006 047067 ZREG----Regular Vehicle Transaction H0043 - Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement 2,532 MI"
    ******
--this doesn't worry me much. I had a very similar issue with my 2002 Duramax truck when it was almost brand new, where the brakes, in my opinion, were defective in that they made horrible noise, squeaking like an old set of brakes that has worn down to metal on metal and needed replacement. However, my dealership was not so understanding, and said the brake noise was within acceptable limits, and therefore wouldn't replace the brake pads as a warranty item*(even I had to admit that the 2002 truck braked perfectly fine--but it was just so freaking noisy when braking that I really had hoped the dealership would at least try brake pad replacement as a possible solution). I assume, with respect to the current truck that I am considering for purchase--that something similar could have happened (but in this instance, this person's dealership was much more accommodating). Thus, I am not worried about the replacement brake pads being installed on this truck at such a tender age. I feel that if the brakes had continued to be a problem, there would have been additional complaints about the brakes somewhere in the rest of the VIN check report on this truck which has since racked up an additional 87,000 miles from the date of the original brake pad replacement. Again, I welcome anybody to advice me that there are too many CUMULATIVE repair issues on this truck, and that I should therefore give this truck a wide PASS and continue my search. What keeps running through my head, and comforts me somewhat, is that, when I contacted the original owner, he gave such a glowing recommendation of this truck, and stated that when he traded it in at 90,000 miles, it was still a great truck, and that I shouldn't be scared to buy it. He said there were no ongoing or current mechanical issues with the truck, and that it had a tremendous amount of power pulling his loaded six horse trailer. (I also have a six horse trailer, so that was good news. The original owner had nothing to gain by lying to me. He had already traded in the truck, already received his trade in value on it from the dealership, and already had purchased a brand new truck. Everyone likes to complain about their truck problems, and I feel that if there were ongoing or past serious issues with that truck, he would've told me so, especially since I actually knew him from when we were younger and rodeoing in the same circles.

Any more thoughts from anyone? All opinions welcome. I know it sounds like I have already 100% made up my mind to purchase the truck, but if you knowledgable forum members think that would be a very bad idea, then I urge you to speak up and save me. I can definitely be swayed from my planned course. *I have absolutely no mechanical knowledge or skills, so I really need the advice from any of you guys who want to take the time to speak up.

Thanks to everyone for helping me with this decision.

The "cylinder" service is reason for concern. Without further details, it's hard to say good or bad. The dealer may allow a consideration for it, which may work in your favor. The issue may very well be in the past, and remain there. A thorough inspection would not be out of order.

The "towing" was incidental to the cylinder service. No concern for that, alone.

The brake repair could have been a customer satisfaction repair, for only a squeak or chatter, which is not uncommon even on new vehicles. Brakes are easy, as long as the complaint is addressed and repaired.

The turbo vane and tranny line repairs aren't uncommon, and not out of line at the mileage.

I'd be more concerned with all the other repairs, which aren't "normal". It looks like they "threw" parts at a problem before finally repairing it, or giving up. These would not be considered common, regardless of outcome.

If the price is right, this could be a good truck, although it appears to be a lemon, or subjected to unusual abuse. If they are trying to get retail, I'd steer clear. Overall condition and consideration for the listed repairs should affect the selling price. If the dealer is unwilling to deal, they will find someone who doesn't do their homework, unfortunately.

Unhappy VIN check request and build report request (the sequel)

Everybody's concerns were absolutely correct. I drove the 150 miles to go see it in person and test drove it; it was a "rode hard and put up wet" dog. Handled badly, engine sounded weird (tapping noise); and not very good pickup. I guess VIN reports don't lie!! I passed on it. New vin check request to follow on another truck. Thanks again; this forum is so helpful.
