Default p0216 ,p0251 where to go from here ?

    Hi All
Truck been running fine up till few weeks ago .
It always went down the road 1800rpm at 65mph .
Started to intermediately jump up to 2200rpm at 65mph then drop back to
1800 . Thought it was trans and was about pint low topped off and seemed fine
Since then truck was hard to start twice . today 3rd time hard start .
On way back home 200 yards from driveway engine surged to 4k then died .
was able to coast to driveway and get it off of road dead.
It does the run and surge then dies in less than minute
It first threw code p0216 cleared that tried to start again .It ran little longer surging and lots black smoke .checked codes again this time p0251 came up by itself .
So its way to hot to do anything with it right now So...
    Does it sound like the IP is shot and needs replacing or as looking in book , the timing is off and just needs a tweek {though it says needs to be running to set ??? }
Too Big job to do at home ? Send to shop to fix ?
320k on motor. yank it and put rebuild in it ?
Body is is great shape and AC is ice cold would hate to let it go .
So what would you do ?
    Thanks Ed

How long have you been driving it? Yours is the same age as mine when it started having fuel line- gas tank troubles.

Have you tried replacing the PMD/FSD yet? Is your FSD on the pump or remote mounted?

Sounds like FSD problems to me.

Haven't replaced the pmd got a spare I can swap out
It hasn't been relocated but It is mounted to a huge finned piece of
Aluminium . I don't have the plastic cover installed that goes over the intake .
I had replaced the oil sensor and lift pump about a year ago with the only difference being that the oem oil gauge reads about 5 psi lower cross the board as compared to the old one . used to be at 10 at idle warmed now at 5 at idle
15 now used to be 20 when running and 40 at start up cold hasn't changed
Will change fuel filter then give the pmd a shot.
I keep the tank filled and it gets used about only once or twice a month putting up 250 miles a pop on it . Keep it hooked up to a battery tender to keep the batteries up .

Ok new fuel filter and swaped out pmd .
never tried other pmd but when installed all engine does is crack over no start at all .Put old pmd back on and fires up and runs for the 15 seconds or so and throws lots of black smoke then stalls .
checked codes but none came up on scanner .
Then did the check deep stored codes and came up with p0219 excessive engine speed .
Not sure when this code was stored but it wasnt up when did the regular scan tests . All I could find was that AFTER new IP pump it should go away .
So get a pcm and see what happens ?
    Or
Better to do myself with new IP or have a shop look at it ?

Is the spare PMD known to be absolutely good for sure? It sounds very suspect that it wouldn't start with the spare PMD.

I would purchase a new PMD and try that before doing anything else. I'm a big fan of the D-tech unit myself:

I definitely would not pull the IP before trying another PMD.
