Default Help..! 95 6.5 Chevy Cuts Out... what would you do?

My 1995 Chev Silverado truck 6.5L. Starts up, idles, but cuts out as you accelerates with smoke.

As SOON as the "Check Engine" light comes on, it's smooth as silk. Drives down the road and accelerates to full rpms with no problem at all.

As soon as I stop- shut the engine off. Restart- the check engine light is off and it won't accelerate without cutting out and smoke. Sometimes in a few seconds the check engine light comes back on and the truck runs great, but every time I shut the engine off it does the same thing.

What would you do yo fix this?

250k miles. Don't know if the injection pump has been replaced. I replaced the lift pump and some other items.

Any input is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

First thing to do is check for DTCs. All you need is a paper clip.

Thanks- that page won't let me in. I guess it's for members only.

Does anyone have a code chart? It's hard to follow but mine looks like it's reading a 78, 53, 63, 54.

IIRC, they should come in numerical order from low to high.

I've not seen any documentation that states that, but I've never seen one that didn't (and I've seen a LOT). If the numbers are in the order displayed, there's a good chance of error in the reading. If so, it's a good idea to check again.

I was always told cure the first code listed then clear the rest and retry to see what comes back. Often the first code causes the following codes.

I think they're numbered such that that rule is also true.
