I have a problem with my brake lights shorting the second I put a new fuse in. How exactly does the switch work? It appears as though there is constant power going through the circuit until you step on the brake and then it cuts it off. How does this translate to the brake lights? Any help is much appreciated.

The stoplight switch is normally closed, held open. When you step on the brake pedal it allows the spring inside the stoplight switch to push the plunger out and complete the circuit. If you have cruise control there will be 4 wires going to the switch, the ones at the base of the switch are for the brake lights and the other 2 disengage the cruise.
