    Probably the fault of the guy who designed the transmission!

    I had a belt driven timing setup in an I-4 that ran in oil. When I was at 62K miles the belt broke (interference engine). A week later they issued a service bulletin to change the belt at 60K...

    What really bothers me is that it's going to cost about $1k to inspect this belt at 150k. How much more to replace it if inspection finds it's bad. What happens if you have the inspection done and 10k later it breaks and you are sitting on the side of the road with a locked up motor?

    As we all know a lot of things can happen to an engine and most are repairable however if the oil pump fails there normally isn't much left between you and a very large repair bill.

    I expect we'll see a lot of these are used car lots with about 150k on them.

    My understanding from that video is that the 150K mile "inspection" means it needs to be replaced at that time. It makes no sense to do all that work just to look at it and not replace it. Kind of like the Honda timing belt. Everyone knows that it is supposed to be replaced at a certain mileage no matter what.

    I agree that it is a poor design from a service aspect, but that's pretty typical these days. Engineers rarely build things with service in mind. It's all about the packaging.
