Welcome aboard!
The system isn't too complicated. The PS pump supplies fluid to the hydroboost unit, and the hydroboost unit distributes fluid to the brake assist, then the steering. Both have a return line back to the pump reservoir. A rapid fluid loss is almost always a line leak, likely on the pressure side if the loss is very rapid, or a return line if it is less rapid (if that makes sense). There is one pressure line from the PS pump to the HB unit, and one pressure line from the HB unit to the steering gear. In any case, an external leak is much easier to identify than most issues that cause problems. Just follow the leak.
