Thread: Time for 2nd set of injectors...

Default Time for 2nd set of injectors...

The '04 Kodiak has 105K on the odometer, and has started the dreaded LB7 white, stinky smoke at idle. It also loads up and dumps a cloud on takeoff. No obvious oil dilution or fuel knock - yet.

First set was at ~50K and the next set of 8 lasted almost exactly the same. With higher RPMs and fuel consumption, it would put the lifespan of each set at about 80-100K, compared to 2500 or 3500 series truck - if you consider the gallons fuel that has passed through, not miles traveled.

Since GM mailed me a letter extending the warranty to 200K, I am not too upset, but will require a few days off the road. I may put 20-30K on this set and start looking for the next heavy tow rig...that way the new owner would have 60-70K of warranty left, before they would be on the hook for a new set.

Everything else still works great. Overall, very happy with the truck.

After considering our schedule, we've decided to run the truck another week 'as-is'...hopefully I won't regret this decision and get stuck out in the boonies with a crankcase full of thin oil or a nasty fuel knock, but customer expecatations and schedule sometimes trump pre-emptive maintenance in this business. (Not to mention getting PAID when the boat gets dropped off...)

Truck and 32' boat from Connecticut head out today from Elk River to Kelowna, BC with driver #2 in the chair. Jim - we'll honk on the way through Missoula!

The first set of injectors was replaced enroute in Spokane, WA last summer. Worst case, we can stop in and have the same mechanic do the second set...

Stopped at local medium duty dealership yesterday and ran diagnostics. #7 injector is the culprit - all the rest are fine. Engine still builds requested/commanded fuel rail pressure, so its not leaking past too badly just yet. Trying to get it done before a Florida roundtrip slated for September 10th.

Truck is scheduled to go in when we get a break in the action for 2 days.

Dealership just called, truck is ready to roll with a fresh set of 8 injectors.

They used the set of injector lines that I supplied them - and are giving back my old ones.
