View Full Version : Best Exhaust Option For Suburban Diesel?

Hi Dr. Lee,

The stock dual exhaust on my 91 Suburban NA 6.2 is getting pretty rusty and leaky, so I'm wondering what to do about replacing it.

I've heard about the banks stinger system, though at $600 +shipping that sounds a bit steep (especially for just plain aluminized pipe). I've also not had much luck finding listings for the stock exhaust system or other alternatives.

I've heard that despite the common wisdom that dual exhausts breath better, that this may not always be the case particularly with the 6.2, though an "H" pipe or "X" pipe is supposed to help this.

What I'm trying to determine is the best combination of good breathing and not making everyone in the sub or outside of it deaf from the exhaust roar.

So, I'm wondering what kind of recommendations
you might have for replacing a stock 6.2 exhaust?

I also assume that adding a free breathing air intake system and filter (like the Banks unit) in combination with the right exhaust setup would help out with both power and mileage?

Thanks for your help,

Moving air in and exhaust out is important to making your NA diesel run. I have 3" dual exhaust with Dynomax SuperTurbo mufflers. This is louder than stock, but a pleasant power-rich sound. I also have an "H"-pipe ahead of the mufflers, and this helps both performance and to mellow out the sound of our unique firing order. The H-pipe is also 3".

I had a local exhaust shop install the system for around $300, but that was a few years ago.

Opening up the restriction in the air intake system is also beneficial, like I did with my "Swanger Air" system.

I had a 6.2 4x4 blazer. Put on a single 3" exhaust with a flow master muff. Ran a lot better and sounded really KOOL. And was not that loud in side kind of pleast. rumble . JD :D
